What does ISL do in the CASSATA project?
ISL is a binational research institute, jointly operated by the French Agency of Defence Innovation (AID) and the German Ministry of Defence. The mission of ISL is to develop technical innovations and future equipment for the armed forces.
In CASSATA project, ISL is mainly involved as coordinator of the Technical Area 2 “Acoustics/Seismic sensing” and leads the WP7 “Integrating knowledge for Acoustic/seismic sensors”. From a technical point of view we are bringing to the consortium our knowledge in term of battlefield noises (sounds of weapon firing, explosive charges …).
What does ISL aim to achieve by participating in the CASSATA project?
The objective is to strengthen the scientific background and the applied solutions for shooting noise detection by the use of innovative MEMS microphone sensors. By extension we expect to gain more insight for the acoustics contribution to data fusion processes.
Another objective is to contribute and benefit of collaboration with European RTOs, SMEs and industrial partners.
What specific areas does ISL focus on in the CASSATA project to improve covert sensing and operational effectiveness amidst rapid changes in European defense?
Acoustic sensors, among others studied in the Cassata project, are passive, 360°, 24/24 and low cost sensors allowing to detect low signing targets (small calibre firing weapons, small UAVs …). The developed sensors are complementary to optical technologies … and will enhance covert sensing for soldier protection, for border and for area surveillance.
In the Cassata studies we will focus our research activities to take into account the detection of new threats in a first step for existing systems and then in a second step to prepare the development of innovative acoustic sensor design, digital signal processing and sensors network architecture.
